There’s a new treatment for submental fullness, otherwise known as “double chin.” It’s called Kybella and it was recently approved by the FDA. This medical breakthrough uses a molecule that naturally occurs in the body to reduce fat cells under the chin. Kybella provides a non-surgical treatment for this common cosmetic issue.
What is Kybella and how does it work?
Kybella is the name given to this particular version of deoxycholic acid. This chemical exists naturally in the body for the purpose of breaking down dietary fat. When it is injected directly into the skin beneath the chin, it treats the fat cells there and causes them to be processed. After these fat cells are reduced, they are absorbed into the body and are greatly reduced.
A series of injections of Kybella are administered under the chin, possibly taking an average of about five minutes. It is a simple in-office procedure with virtually little-to-no recovery time needed. Injections can be administered once a month for up to six months to possibly achieve the desired results.
The Advantages of Kybella
Are there any disadvantages?
You may experience mild soreness in the injection area for possibly two or three days. Other side effects may include mild bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness at the site of injections. It is not currently covered by insurance as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Kybella may not work on other areas of the body because too much of the product would have to be injected, making it much less efficient than liposuction or other procedures.
